UL is seeking a Product Development Advisor to join our Appliances Lab in Newton, IA.

UL is looking for an engineer with strong engineering experience centered around product development and test development. The position is to help our clients with their products and services by providing them with test equipment and other tools that help them improve. Tasks may include building test fixtures and equipment, programming, analyzing data, and research necessary to find solutions to problems. Projects will vary from hands-on mechanical work to programming and may last days to months for a single project. Work type will be 30% - 80% LabVIEW programming, depending on customer and project needs.
  1. Determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost and time by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include travel to client sites.

  2. Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Acts to address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.

  3. Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.


Some University education in a related discipline (Engineering, technology, physics, etc.)
(Bachelor Degree in Engineering preferred)

6 (six) years directly related experience preferably working with consumer product design and lab equipment.
  • High proficiency programming with National Instruments' LabVIEW with minimum of Developer certification. Strong LabVIEW programming ability is required with a minimum certification of LabVIEW Developer. LabVIEW Architect certification is preferred.

  • Other programming skills such as C sharp or visual basic is a plus, but not required.

  • Substantial hands-on experience with machinery and equipment is required.

  • Hands-on experience constructing and modifying test equipment setups.
