Position Purpose

Under general supervision from Grounds Supervisor, is responsible for installing, maintaining, and caring for College-wide shrubs and landscaping plants, including the identification of related pests, fungi, and diseases. Performs a variety of sometimes strenuous physical tasks dedicated to the daily care and maintenance of shrubs and plants and, when necessary, grounds. Responsible for operating and maintaining all related tools, equipment, and vehicles including mowers, seeders, rototillers, aerators, etc. Instructs other Grounds Workers in the use of tools, equipment, and vehicles as necessary. In winter, is responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks, patios and some drives, using hand tools and small vehicles. Removes and disposes of dirt, debris, and rubbish from campus lawns and lots, Directs small work parties assigned to specific projects.

Shrubworker A Responsibilities

  • Surveys College shrub and landscaping plant populations for evidence of pests, fungi, and disease. Recommends shrub or plant installation and removal as appropriate.
  • Identifies and analyzes structural problems affecting specific shrubs. Recommends and implements solutions such as corrective pruning.
  • Develops and implements College-wide shrub and plant fertilization program. Designates shrubs and plants requiring fertilization. Measures shrubs and plants; determines fertilizers to be used; calculates amount of fertilizer needed for each shrub or plant; applies fertilizer in granular or liquid forms; sets up pumps, hoses, flow controls, etc. for liquid fertilizers. Investigates new and/for different fertilizers as necessary. Cultivates shrubs as necessary. Directs regular and temporary help as necessary to accomplish these tasks.
  • Works with landscapers to determine appropriate varieties of shrubs and landscaping plants for specific locations.
  • Collaborates with Grounds Supervisor in the selection of contractors to perform such work as major shrub planting projects. Prepares work sites for contractor arrival. Instructs contractors on work specifications and oversees work performance.
  • Seeds, weeds, irrigates, aerates, fertilizes, sods, grades, and mows campus grounds using requisite tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Operates hydraulic sprayer as necessary for fertilization and irrigation.
  • Collects and removes all debris and litter from campus grounds and lots.
  • Removes snow and ice from sidewalks, patios, and other designated areas, using requisite tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Drives pick-up truck and other vehicles to get to and from assigned areas on campus.
  • Winterizes irrigation systems.
