Position Purpose

Under general supervision from the Grounds Supervisor, the Turf Manager is responsible, in the non-Winter months, for renovating and/or re-establishing the turf of the College's grounds and athletic fields, which includes the identification, control, and treatment of pests and diseases and the legal and correct selection, preparation, record keeping, and application of related chemicals, sprays, and pesticides. As necessary, responsible for directing the work of a designated Grounds Crew assigned to specific projects related to turf care and maintenance. In the winter months, assesses material and equipment needs for the forthcoming seasons and procures new inventory stock as necessary. Works with other Grounds Crew to effect snow and ice removal from campus sidewalks, patios, and some drives.

Turf Management/Maintenance

  • Assists Grounds Supervisor in determining and assigning priority to turf renovation projects for campus grounds and athletic fields. Directs regular and temporary help as necessary to accomplish these tasks.
  • Advises Grounds Supervisor on I.P.M. turf care. Determines tasks that must be accomplished to achieve project goals.
  • Identifies turf problems, including disease and pest infestations and climactic problems. Selects and applies chemical sprays and pesticides to treat pest and disease infestations.
  • Ensures that all legal requirements and safety standards are being met.
  • Performs all tasks related to turf maintenance, including disease and pest control, aeration, seeding, hydroseeding, overseeding, irrigation, fertilization, and thatching. Determines which fertilizers are needed and the rate at which they shall be applied. Determines seed make-up for designated locations.
  • Ensures that all legal requirements and safety standards are being met.
  • Ensures that Scully Field is maintained in the winter months using necessary snow/ice removal techniques and visual observations.
  • Removes snow and ice from walks, stairs, patios, etc.

Equipment Use/Maintenance

  • Operates, maintains, and, when necessary, directs the use of all related tools, equipment, and vehicles employed in the turf management program, including hydraulic sprayers for pesticide application, fertilization and irrigation.
  • In the winter months, assesses materials and equipment needs for the forthcoming seasons and procures new inventory stock as necessary.

Landscape Design

  • May design and draw small landscape projects in conjunction with FOM management and/or consultants. This function does not include CAD / CAM drawings or detailed landscape layouts.
  • May work in collaboration with other areas of the grounds crew, Facilities Planning, or special requests from senior leadership.

Reporting/Recordkeeping

  • As requested by FOM Management, provides reports regarding the condition of turf across campus and on athletic fields.
  • In collaboration with Grounds Supervisor, provides recommendations for improvement.
    Keeps records of pesticide/chemical applications as required by federal/state regulations and Dartmouth College policy.
