Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Director, Communications Research Division to work in our National & Homeland Security directorate. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Engineering and Research Office Building facility with every other Friday off. You will report directly to the Associate Lab Director for National & Homeland Security.
Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) National & Homeland Security (N&HS) Directorate is looking for an experienced technical professional with a track record of leadership for the role of Director of N&HS's Communications Research Division.
Responsibilities Include:
- You'll develop a vision for and strategically lead the Communications Research Division, ensuring that INL remains the premier laboratory solving national challenges in the area of mission critical communications research, development, demonstration, and deployment.
- With approximately 60 staff and rapidly growing, the Communications Research Division conducts cutting edge research, evaluation, testing, and training for secure and resilient cellular and non-cellular wireless technology solutions, including 5G and beyond.
- This research combines High Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Quantum Sensing with next-generation electromagnetic communications technologies.
- The division also performs research, development, testing, and training related to new technology in the radio frequency spectrum to ensure secure dynamic spectrum access and sharing as a key enabler to critical systems.
- Develop and implement strategic plans and business strategies that result in significant growth of INL's role in the mission-critical communications R&D domain.
- Oversee the division's successful execution of programs within cost and schedule requirements while adhering to INL standards for safety, security, and research excellence.
- Develop relationships with mission critical communications sponsors, particularly in the Department of Defense, while also developing partnerships with universities, laboratories, industry organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Provide career development for a growing staff with different expertise, including wireless and spectrum security, energy sector communications, program management, electrical engineering, and more.
- Hire new team members that enhance INL's capabilities and contribute to the Laboratory's culture of research excellence and innovation.
- Lead the division in growing and sustaining a culture that values diversity and fosters mentorship and collaboration.
- Effectively and efficiently handle the division's indirect budgets (e.g., Organizational Management, Laboratory Directed Research and Development, and Program Development).
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical field plus at least 10 years of relevant experience in U.S. military and/or industry required or a MS degree in engineering or technical field plus at least 8 years of relevant experience in U.S. military and/or industry required.
- Five years of management experience required.
- National-level experience desired.
- Documented track record of successfully leading high-performing teams and developing employees for professional growth and career advancement.
- Experience with wireless and spectrum technical issues and strategy required.
- Knowledge of sponsors, particularly among Department of Defense elements, and leading solution providers in academia and industry required.
- Established skills in interpersonal and customer relations, oral and written communication at a level appropriate for senior leadership, and in forming/leading teams in the accomplishment of strategic goals required.
- Must be willing to work onsite at INL facilities in and near Idaho Falls, ID.
- This position requires an active Top Secret security clearance (or DOE equivalent Q clearance) and must be able to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Must be willing and able to successfully complete a polygraph examination.
Job Information:
- The target pay range for this position is $165,793.00 -$236,238.00 annually. The full pay range is $121,920.00 - $316,992.00. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
