Orthopedic Technician (Ortho Tech)
Position Summary
The Orthopedic/Cast Technician works with physicians, physician assistants and medical assistants in caring for patients by applying varying casting techniques for different injuries and set casts according to the provider’s orders. Orthopedic cast technicians are responsible for applying and removing casts, splints and braces.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The key duties and responsibilities of the Orthopedic/Cast Technician include, but are not limited to:
- Provide patient education on cast and splint care and wear
- Assist the physician, physician assistant and medical assistant with orthopedic casting and application of splints.
- Position involves the application and removal of casts, splints and braces
- Facilitates communication between practice team and providers to meet patient needs
- Utilizes EMR for provider and Medical Assistant support
- Adheres to practice’s Safety, Risk Management, and Universal Precautions standards
- Maintains compliance with current OSHA and infections waste management standards
- Ensures supplies are stocked and equipment is in safe working order.
- Assists in ordering, re-ordering supplies, stocking clinical exam rooms, and other stocking duties as needed.
- Measures, applies, changes and removes casts, braces and splints for patients.
- Repairs casts.
- Applies and instructs patient in the use of durable medical equipment.
- Removes dressings, sutures and staples.
- Prepares patients for exams and special procedures.
- Initiates CPR and emergency measures as required.
- Assists in transporting and rooming patients as needed.
Education/Experience
- High School diploma or GED.
- Accredited orthopedic technologist program certification preferred but not required.
- Minimum one-year as an orthopedic technologist, athletic trainer, MA or CNA with casting experience required.
- Previous experience in orthopedic healthcare preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Skilled in performance of basic computer/keyboard functions.
- Able to communicate effectively.
- Able to organize work and establish procedures.
- Understanding of human anatomy sufficient to perform duties of the job.

Salary range
- $23 - $31 per hour
