At MFS, you will find a culture that supports you in doing what you do best. Our employees work together to reach better outcomes, favoring the strongest idea over the strongest individual. We put people first and demonstrate care and compassion for our community and each other. Because what we do matters – to us as valued professionals and to the millions of people and institutions who rely on us to help them build more secure and prosperous futures.
Investment Support and Operations Co-ops
MFS is a global investment management firm focused on creating long-term value responsibly by doing what’s right for our clients every day. Our rich history dates to 1924, when our founders invented the mutual fund. Since then, collaboration and innovation have fueled our success. Our unwavering commitment to finding the best, most durable investment opportunities is what sets us apart – and our success is grounded in our unique approach, disciplined philosophy and collaborative culture.
THE ROLE
Joining our team provides opportunities to share your voice and talents, tackle challenging problems, create solutions and collaborate with dedicated co-workers. This Co-op experience provides participants with a meaningful, relevant work experience as part of their academic studies. In addition to daily responsibilities, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a series of structured activities designed to enhance their learning experience including:
• Co-Op New Hire Orientation
• Senior Leadership Speaker Series
• Social & Networking Events
• Presentation Challenges
At the conclusion of this position, co-ops will have increased their knowledge of investing, the mutual fund industry, employee engagement, and a firm understanding of how investment operations work at an asset manager.
MFS co-op positions are a 6-month commitment, working Monday – Friday (January 7th - June 27th), and work between 35-40 hours. Our program is designed for undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in a co-op program through their college or university and can meet our requirements.
About Global Investment and Client Support Co-ops
Global Investment and Client Support (GIS) is responsible for providing the highest level of customer service to the investment team, distribution teams and our clients. This group is responsible for making sure that trades are processed accurately, that transactions are made swiftly and without error, and that all of the data that makes this happen is accurate. If you're looking for a co-op that gives you exposure to the operations that go into building a portfolio, this group may be for you.
Below are the different functions within GIS:
Fixed Income & Equity Operations, STP
The Fixed Income and Equity Operations Teams are responsible for the depository reviews, trade confirmations, settlement instructions, trade settlement and failed trades on all securities traded within the Equity and Fixed Income Trading Departments. They are also responsible for ensuring all transactions are delivered to the custodian banks for each account.
Market Data Administration
The Market Data group is responsible for ensuring MFS investment areas have access to all approved market data information and the use of those services is efficient and effective. This responsibility includes all related administrative and technology functions required to support such market data services.
Asset Control
The Asset Control team ensures accurate cash and positions by conducting daily cash reconciliations, daily position reconciliations and monthly position reconciliations. Any differences between MFS' internal system and the records of the clients' custodian are identified, communicated, investigated, and resolved as a matter of urgency in order to avoid costly trade errors and claims or potential performance issues.
Trade Processing and Collateral Management
The Trade Processing Group (TP) is responsible for ensuring that the company's internal accounting system is updated with any transactions that take place within the portfolios. The group is responsible for collateral management and reducing counterparty risk by ensuring collateral is properly posted and tracked between MFS and our counterparties.
Enterprise Information Management
The Enterprise Information Management Office ("EIM") has responsibility for establishing and monitoring Standards & Guidelines for Data Governance. EIM provides the rules, policies, procedures, tools, roles and responsibilities that guide overall management of enterprise data to ensure consistent, authoritative and trustworthy data is provided in timely manner.
