Job Summary

The Staff Accountant ensures compliance with accounting and internal control policies and procedures and works closely with the Manager, Financial Operations, on the overall accounting and finance functions of the office. This position works as part of a team in the overall daily functions of the Finance Office and supports meeting goals and deadlines.

Position Description

  • Perform general ledger reconciliation account analysis.
  • Process all void and/or stop payment requests and reissue payments as necessary.
  • Reconcile accounts and initiate corrective action, including reconciliation of multiple systems.
  • Prepare journal entries related to cash and credit card activities.
  • Research inquiries from departments and propose solutions.
  • Conduct transfer of financial information from internal accounting system, exporting applicable files to the University system.
  • Manage petty cash account and assist with daily cash count.
  • Preparation and submission of 1099 form reporting.
  • Assist with the monthly close process and year-end procedures.
  • Assist with budget and forecasting processes.
  • Process time-sensitive payment related disputes/chargebacks for online and in-person payments.
  • Monitor multiple shared mailboxes and respond or redirect as needed.
  • Manage the travel process, including overseeing day-to-day review and approval of travel related inquiries, authorizations and confirmations, ensuring travel policies are followed, and reviewing travel reimbursement requests.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in accounting or related field, supplemented by a minimum of five years of progressively responsible financial management or accounting experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel required. Microsoft Office and financial database experience.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Washington DC. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
