Job Responsibilities

Clayton County Health District seeks to hire an hourly WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.  The counselor will attend breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor and counsel WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by local WIC program. Counsel women during clinic and manage a caseload of prenatal and postpartum mothers and makes routine contact with all clients assigned.  Gives breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including providing information about benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and troubleshooting breastfeeding concerns.  Maintains accurate and confidential records on all clients.  Appropriately refers mothers to other resources within the clinic.   Attends and assists with breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support groups attends staff meetings as required and breastfeeding conferences. May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience as a consumer of Public Health, DFCS or WIC services; AND ability to communicate effectively with other consumers. Candidate must be a current or past WIC participant who has successfully breastfed at least one infant for at least six months. Good written and oral communications skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who in addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications possess the following: 

  • HS Diploma or equivalent 
  • Previous experience with breastfeeding 
  • Must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and able to demonstrate the willingness to help mother’s enjoy a positive experience
  • Selected applicant must have reliable transportation and be willing to use for work
