Job Summary
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: Transformative Learning (TL), housed in the Office for Student Success, is a centralized student support unit on campus, a student’s one-stop shop for on-campus academic resources. The 3 main pillars of Transformative Learning are:
1. Academic Preparation & Achievement (APA) APA oversees placement testing, introductory courses such as UK 101/201 and specific programming/courses that support college readiness.
2. Integrated Success Coaching (ISC) ISC oversees the individual and group coaching services for undergraduate and graduate students in addition to leading the International Coach Federation Accredited Coach Training.
3. Peer Supported Learning (PSL) PSL oversees peer-to-peer academic support programming. These supports include The Study (provides drop-in peer tutoring for math, science and business courses), Presentation U: Speaking & Writing Center (provides peer tutoring for communication and composition assignments for any class) and Supplemental Instruction (peer lead study groups for some of UK’s most challenging courses).
WHAT IS AN INTEGRATED SUCCESS COACH? Professional Integrated Success Coaches (ISC) at the University of Kentucky are individuals who take a holistic approach to working with students to assist them in achieving their goals and finding college success. ISCs are specially trained to ask students non-judgmental questions to help them get the clarity they need to be successful. In a typical coaching session, Integrated Success Coaches partner with students to design personalized action plans around topics such as Academic Life Skills, Careers, Finances, Leadership, First Gen, and Wellness. ISCs truly value and enjoy working with students, faculty, staff and partners.
A TYPICAL WORKDAY for an ISC: An example of a workday as an Integrated Success Coach typically includes a combination of 3-4 of the following activities:
- Engaging in individual coaching sessions with students,
- Leading one or more group coaching sessions,
- Documenting interactions, collecting data, and communicating with students,
- Collaborating with and supporting all pillars/programs/services within Transformative Learning,
- Partnering with other programs across campus to support students,
- Leading UK’s International Coaching Federation accredited coach training for partners and other coaches,
- Researching, learning about, and developing coaching tools,
- Other duties as assigned.
Student Success will, from the time of early college outreach to graduation and beyond, support students in living a life of meaning and purpose. From a student-centered framework, our practice will be grounded in peer-reviewed literature, national best practices, and data-informed decision-making.
