Accounting Intern (Summer 2025)

 Minot, ND l Hybrid position

This is a short term, summer internship working Monday-Friday 8 -5 PM 

This role is elgible for Sick and Safe paid leave, as well as paid volunteer time

Summary

The Accounting Intern will learn the functions and daily operations of Centerspace’s Accounting department, including Fixed Assets/Job Cost, AP, Tax, and general accounting processes.

Expectations

Adheres to established policies and procedures. Generally given substantial guidance but expected to be self-directed once trained.  Interns are expected to demonstrate ability in accounting and intermediate skills in standard computer software programs, including Microsoft Excel. Interns are expected to have good organizational, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Accounting staff will guide the intern in the following areas:

  • Preparation of financial reports relating to the month end process.
  • Works with the Job Cost team to accurately manage projects within the Yardi Job Cost subledger. This will include job creation, entering and updating job budgets, aiding in the AP process, cost tracking/reporting and job close out.
    • Insurance analysis and reporting
    • Capital analysis and reporting.
    • Analyze and review construction status with Project Managers. Direct and participate in cost analysis.
  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare and post monthly journal entries to the general ledger and/or a subsidiary journal.
  • Records and posts financial transactions. Prepare journal entries and provide supporting documentation during the close; such as calculating, validating, and recording accruals and expenses, re-classes and adjustments.
  • Review of expenditure CapEx qualifications and posting reclasses, as needed.
  • Perform detailed review, analysis and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Assists with research and analysis.
  • Assist with tax basis reconciliations and tax basis reporting.
    • Assist in the preparation of monthly sales tax return.
    • Assist in the preparation of personal property tax returns.
    • Assist with the coordination of the payment of real estate taxes.
  • Rotation through different functional areas of the department, including assisting with projects as assigned.
    • Financial reporting tie-outs
    • Vendor research.
    • Invoice/PO coding and research
  • Participation in department and company meetings
  • Assists with gathering or preparing audit materials for internal and external auditors
  • Responds to requests from internal customers, vendors, and auditors.
  • Performs other special projects and duties as assigned including back-up for team members .

Qualifications

  • Education and/or Experience: Current enrollment in a course of study in a field related to Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.
  • Work Environment: The noise level in the office environment is usually reasonably quiet. While visiting sites employee may be exposed to outdoor extreme weather conditions, loud noises, heat/cold/wet, loud noise, heavy equipment and obstacles to navigate. Appropriate safety precautions will be provided and must be used.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    • Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
    • Mathematical Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Experience with financial modeling is strongly preferred.
    • Reasoning Ability – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Computer Skills – To perform the job successfully, an individual should have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
