About EdRedesign

The EdRedesign Lab at Harvard Graduate School of Education: Founded in 2014 by Paul Reville, Francis Keppel Professor of Practice of Educational Policy and Administration at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, EdRedesign provides catalytic support to the cradle-to-career place-based partnership field to drive systems-level change and open personalized pathways to well-being, educational attainment, civic engagement, and upward mobility. To support this growing field to effect transformational change that serves the needs and talents of individual children and youth, our work focuses on talent development, actionable research, our Institute for Success Planning, and our By All Means initiatives. Our mission is to ensure the social, emotional, physical, and academic development and well-being of all children and youth, especially those affected by racism and poverty. 

Finances

Reporting to the Executive Director, this position is an integral part of the Leadership Team and responsible for stewarding the financial health of the organization, both now and for long-term sustainability. Providing strategic oversight of a complex mix of gifts, grants, contracts, and other revenue generating activities, this position works collaboratively with internal and external colleagues to ensure full compliance with University policies and protocols. This role is also responsible for working with the Executive Leadership Team to determine resource allocation, deployment, controls, and advises on overall financial strategy.

Serve as the key financial advisor and provides guidance and advice on the financial and strategic implications of different initiatives. Develops financial models for strategic planning and sets benchmarks for financial health and long-term sustainability.

Develops integrated budget and long-term financial forecast across all grants and funding sources; manages annual budget processes (internal and external), including development of financial reporting and narratives for various audiences. Works with division and Dept leads on financial planning and budgeting.

Oversees and analyzes grants and contracts to ensure expenses are being incurred and paid according to the terms and conditions of the agreement. Monitors overall Dept spending to ensure alignment with strategic plans.

Develops, implements, and improves upon systems to manage internal processes related to grants, gifts, and contracts, including development and timely execution of MOUs, contracts, proposals, and reports. Works with senior staff to develop and document processes to ensure that staff are allocated accurately and efficiently and to better integrate financial and managerial staffing processes. Disseminates information and trains appropriate Dept staff on changes to policies and procedures.

Operations

Oversees events operations including several major, annual on-campus convenings with complex logistics. Develops and ensures documentation of best practices, training, and support for all staff engaged in event planning.

Oversees day-to-day office operations, space planning, office utilization, IT, and renovations. Ensures that space is configured for office sharing/productivity and coordinates with Operations on moves and major office updates. Manages operational costs and logistics, including vendor contracts.

Represents the organization and advocates for its interests with key offices at HGSE and the University, building productive and collegial relationships with personnel in Finance, OSP, and beyond. In addition, acts as lead financial liaison with external stakeholders outside of Harvard.

Broadly, across the organization, develops, implements, and improves upon systems to manage all aspects of operations.

Supervision

Supervises finance and operations staff. Assigns work and tracks team efficiency and effectiveness.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • A minimum of 7 years relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Supervisory experience; advanced knowledge of grant management, financial principles, budget management, and financial analysis. Experience in an academic setting, creativity, flexibility, diligence, efficiency. Ability to absorb and analyze large amounts of data in a short timeframe. Highly developed financial, analytical, organizational, and communication skills. High-level fluency in MS Excel as well as Microsoft Office programs.

Strong management and interpersonal skills including demonstrated supervisory experience; and strong oral and written communications skills. Ability to design efficient organization-wide processes; Master’s degree preferred; experience working in a finance role in a university or other non-profit setting; and familiarity with the financial and programmatic requirements and practices of major foundations including gifts and grants; organized, flexible, and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment; Proven ability to handle sensitive data with discretion.

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).
