THE POSITION

The State of Connecticut, Department of Aging and Disability Services (ADS) is now hiring for the position of Education Supervisor to join their team! This position is needed to support staff, school districts, parents, and students for whom BESB provides services to under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). The Education Supervisor supports teachers who need to provide mandated direct service hours in accordance with students' IEPs (Individualized Education Plan) to stay in compliance with state education regulations.

  • Represent division in case conferences regarding individual program planning and development and administration of educational programs and services offered by the state.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)


In the Department of Aging and Disability Services, Board of Education and Services for the Blind this class is accountable for supervising professional staff providing instruction and other services to visually impaired students.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


  • Supervises professional instructional and service staff assigned to division;

  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY


  • Knowledge of
    • philosophy, methods and technologies of education with particular emphasis upon blindness and visual impairment; 
    • social factors which influence attitudes and behaviors of blind or visually impaired individuals and their families; 
    • supervisory principles and techniques; 
  • Ability to
    • understand and explain complex written material; 
    • prepare reports; 
    • develop effective relationships with those contacted in the work; 
    • teach.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE


Eight (8) years of professional employment in education of the blind or visually impaired.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED



  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) years of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

  • A Master's degree may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience supervising teachers of the visually impaired and support staff members
  • Experience performing on site visits to local schools to evaluate prescribed individual educational programs
  • Experience evaluating staff performance
  • Experience interpreting state policies and procedures to staff and local education agencies
  • Experience participating in case conferences regarding individual program planning development and administration of educational programs and services
  • Experience facilitating professional staff development through individual conferences, discussion of best teaching practices and in-service training programs
  • Experience coordinating administration of projects for visually impaired individuals such as low vision services or career education services
  • Possession of a certificate in special education in the area of teaching the blind or partially-sighted issued by the State Board of Education

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


Educator Certification issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education leading to professional certification within three (3) years of employment.
