Job Summary

The Manager of Staff Training and Development supports the Harvard Center for Comparative Medicine (HCCM) by directing the training and supporting the growth of all staff within the animal care operations team to meet both individual and organizational needs.  The Manager of Staff Training and Development is responsible for collaborating across multiple levels within HCCM and with other stakeholders across the University to advance a positive workplace culture focused on safety and learning, and to help ensure high standards of animal care and welfare across all HCCM facilities and satellite areas.
 

The Manager of Staff Training and Development reports to the Assistant Director of Animal Care Operations.

 

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and deliver a comprehensive training program for staff using various training techniques (e.g. e-learning, coaching, classroom training, hands-on instruction) to enhance employees’ skills, understanding, and performance. 
  • Drive the development and documentation of internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the animal care operations team in close collaboration with the Senior Manager of Animal Care Operation.
  • Engage with staff across multiple levels to foster a collaborative approach to identifying needs for training and standardization. 
  • Determine, in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Animal Care Operations, which trainings to create, change, and eliminate, and which trainings each staff member must complete.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in Environmental Health and Safety to formalize and augment trainings related to general safety, ergonomics, and biosafety.
  • Oversee the management and periodic review of internal SOPs and associated materials.
  • Assist with reviewing and updating IACUC-approved SOPs and other documents.
  • Develop and oversee a “train the trainer” program to ensure consistency in how staff members tasked with training others are delivering content.
  • Help assess the skills and performance of staff members and offer feedback to the Senior Manager of Animal Care Operations.  Help create tailored training plans as needed.
  • Develop and direct a robust onboarding process for new hires to expedite learning and enhance employee engagement.
  • Determine areas of focus for ongoing refresher trainings.
  • Identify, facilitate, and create opportunities for professional development and continuing education for staff, including establishing a forum for staff members to learn more about the research they are supporting.
  • Serve as a backup for the Senior Manager of Animal Care Operations in their absence.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience
 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in laboratory animal care management with an increasing level of responsibility in work history.  Specialized education may count toward work experience. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced computer and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in various training platforms and techniques.
  • Excellent collaboration and motivational skills.
  • Ability to plan, manage time and multitask effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to problem-solve.
  • Experience working in ABSL-2 conditions and/or non-human primates preferred.

Certificates and Licenses

LATg or CMAR certification preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory equipment (e.g. N95 mask or PAPR), if/when necessary.

Additional Information

This is a two-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. 

Offer contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement medical evaluation.

Work Format Details

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
