Description
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Fuel Materials Engineer to work in our Fuel Development department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.
You will apply engineering principles and methods to problems relative to metals, ceramics, cermets, and advanced fuel forms. This is related to the production, processing, and characterization of materials, namely nuclear fuels. You may develop new techniques associated with production or characterization for known materials, work with composite materials, or may specialize in one type of material such as metal and metal alloys, ceramics, or novel and advanced material forms. You will be part of the INL Nuclear Nexus.
You will apply materials science and engineering principals towards the development of nuclear fuels. This includes developing and performing fabrication techniques for fuels and fuel systems, and subsequent analysis and characterization to support further development or testing efforts.
Responsibilities Include:
- Support materials testing and characterization for multiple research programs.
- Review requirements, designs, codes, tests, and documentation.
- Develop production parameters to keep consistent quality and performance of outputs and deliverables.
- Lead in technical design and testing committees and provide insight and direction to ensure development projects are being solved for customers.
- Provide technical solutions and position INL for potential strategic business ventures.
- Maintain product configuration management. Establish and update product and materials specifications.
- Oversee the successful execution (cost, schedule, environmental compliance, quality assurance, and safety) of assigned projects.
- Mentor and support peers and junior staff in technical growth.
Minimum Requirements:
- Level 3: Bachelor's and 5 years of experience. Master's and 2 years of experience. PhD and 2 years of experience. Education from an ABET accredited institution.
- Level 4: Bachelor's and 9 years of experience. Master's and 6 years of experience. PhD and 4 years of experience. Education from an ABET accredited institution.
- Experience commensurate with level which may include experience in experiments and computational areas.
- Experience with nuclear fuel development, research, or production activities.
- Experience with material characterization techniques and their development such as: microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), mechanical property testing, thermal property testing, or chemical and isotopic analysis.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have Experience In:
- Experience with quality assurance requirements as implemented in a research environment, such as NQA-1, DOE O414.1D, or similar.
- Demonstrated technical communication skills with the ability to convey complex topics to multiple audiences.
- Experience leading small project teams and managing technical collaborations, including when stakeholders are located in different physical work locations.
Job Information:
- The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($93,204 - $191,076) / Level 4 ($111,888 - $229,284). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
