Job Summary

The Research Analyst position in the Agriculture and Environmental Informatics Laboratory, funded by the University of Kentucky Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, will join Dr. Mizuta’s ongoing collaborative projects with a diverse range of stakeholders, including farmers, crop consultants, scientists from other research institutions, industries, and government agencies. The selected candidate will also be encouraged to develop their own research project with Dr. Mizuta’s guidance.

Specific areas include but not limited to the precision agriculture, digital soil mapping, geospatial modeling and soil health research. If you are passionate about using big data and (geo)computational analysis to address complex challenges at the intersection of agriculture and the environment (forestry, geography, water, climate), we encourage you to apply. We highly welcome your applications if you are interested in publishing scientific articles and grant applications. Main responsibilities include but not limited to
  • Maintain lab/field operations and coordinate student workforce
  • Conduct and supervise on-farm trials and trainees for sampling
  • Prepare samples and analyze laboratory/field/proximal/remote sensing data
  • Create and manage a database and metadata
  • Assist with grant writing and manuscript preparation
  • Assist in mentoring trainees



Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • Handling remote sensing data using GIS
  • Coding machine learning algorithms
  • Effective communication and teamwork mindset

Preferred Education/Experience
  • PhD degree or postdoc training in Precision Agriculture, Soil Science, Computer Science, Earth Science or closely related fields
  • Experience in writing publications/grant applications
  • Experience in field work (soil, water, and/or crop sampling, and/or proximal sensing data in field)
  • Proficiency using open-source geospatial libraries in Python or R
  • Experience in supercomputing
  • Proficiency in developing machine learning algorithms or infrastructure
  • Experience with cloud computing/API infrastructure (Google Earth Engine, OpenGeo etc.)
  • Part 107 Certificate
  • Experience in designing a flight path, operating drone flights, processing drone data
  • Experience in remote sensing analysis
  • Experience with machine learning / artificial intelligence applications and coding
