Job Summary

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is committed to training and inspiring the next generation of health care leaders. Our faculty are passionate about making the world a better place by improving health and health care. We work on compelling and important problems, from making the delivery of care safer and more efficient, to expanding health insurance coverage and eliminating disparities, to designing and improving the performance of entire health systems.

HPM faculty members seek an energetic and organized individual to assist with a portfolio of multidisciplinary health policy, management, public health, and health services research projects. Our faculty use a variety of datasets--including Medicare, Medicaid and commercial datasets—and surveys to inform our research objectives. Project topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Access and affordability of health care
  • Quality of care, health outcomes, and equity for US populations
  • Health economics focused on the economic behavior of providers, insurers, and governments (local, state, federal, and international) that affect health and medical care
  • Impact of financialization and provider-payment systems that affect health care
  • Health care management focused on organizational performance of health care institutions
  • Public health policy focused on injury control, obesity and food policy, and youth violence prevention.
  • Health decision science to promote informed and systematic decision making
  • Climate change and health system resilience
 
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and project coordination skills, experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, and experience performing highly detailed work with attention and care while obtaining and providing information on numerous inquiries. In addition to the research aims described above, a key aspect of the HPM mission is to train the next generation of health policy and health system leaders. To this end, HPM faculty are enthusiastic about providing opportunities for mentorship and professional growth that align with the successful candidate's long-term goals.

Position Description

The successful candidate will work closely with faculty and research team members on a wide range of project-related tasks. These duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

  • Coordination and maintenance of appropriate IRB and data use agreement certifications
  • Developing mechanisms to support faculty and staff, including coordination logistics, timetables for implementation of departmental activities, and appropriate review and reporting
  • Management of external communications (e.g., website, media and policy outreach)
  • Partial assistance with grant-writing and research proposals
  • Managing communication with external consultants and collaborators, specifically related to data sharing and access
  • Coordination of project communications
  • Departmental research meeting coordination and documentation
  • Assisting with dissemination of faculty research and initiatives through various internal and external outlets (e.g., website, social media)
  • Providing administrative and logistics support to coordinate research seminars, conferences, and symposiums for the department
  • Working closely with HSPH communications staff and lobbyist for policy translation of HPM faculty’s research
  • Other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of two years from the date of hire with the likelihood of extension.
 
PLEASE NOTE: Short-listed finalists may be asked to write an abstract based on a selected article and create a few Power Point slides as part of the selection process.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant experience is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

  • Bachelor's Degree in health or social sciences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health services research
  • Experience working with health care-related topics such as health policy or health services research or coursework
  • A strong writing background
  • Project management background
  • Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific Microsoft software applications (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Experience with EndNote, Mendeley and/or other reference managers 
  • Strong attention to detail skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Enthusiasm for a wide range of research and project management tasks

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
