Position Description

The Marks lab in the Department of Systems Biology is looking for a Software Engineer to work in a team using state-of-the-art machine learning approaches for modeling genomes and proteins from viruses to humans. This person will join a vibrant Computational Biology lab at Harvard Medical School and work as part of a team to build open source software to predict the effects of genetics and viral evolution modeling, genetic variation on human disease and protein design - among other projects. In this role, you may be expected to develop, monitor and provide support services for the EVCouplings server, build analysis pipelines for SARS-CoV-2 protein and RNA interactions within virus and host cells, shift to other variant of concern (CoV) models, and train lab members and collaborators in software developed and maintained by the Marks Lab. These tasks may include biweekly/monthly reporting, monitoring support services for EVCoupings, troubleshooting servers, and managing lab storage space and data use. The ideal candidate will have enthusiasm for learning new domains and advanced code fluency.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum two years’ additional post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
